Banned Books Week: Sharing Session <http://www.gclc.org/viewevent?id=832>
Join us for a discussion of Banned Books Week and share your thoughts on
censorship and intellectual freedom. What programs will your library
promote during Banned Books Week? What displays will your library create
for Banned Books Week? How can libraries stress the importance of free
speech and how can intellectual freedom be promoted? To what extent do
libraries "censor" their collections when pressured by the community?
Come and share your tips and tricks while we discuss Banned Books!
If your library has put together displays for BBW or if you plan to,
please bring these ideas (and the materials, if possible) to the
discussion!

Description
Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read, and will be celebrated
Sept. 23-30, 2006. Banned Books Week brings to light books that have
been challenged or banned and questions the implications of censoring
these materials.
According to ALA, "Banned Books Week (BBW) celebrates the freedom to
choose or the freedom to express one's opinion even if that opinion
might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance
of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints
to all who wish to read them. After all, intellectual freedom can exist
only where these two essential conditions are met."
"Without Freedom of Thought, there can be no such Thing as Wisdom; and
no such Thing as publick Liberty, without Freedom of Speech."---Benjamin
Franklin
