What's New on NetWellness - July 2006

Feature of the Month - Sunglasses - More Than a Fashion Statement

It's summertime, which means more of us are going outside to enjoy the
weather. Because of this trend, July has been designated UV Safety
Month, and NetWellness joins the American Academy of Ophthalmology and
Prevent Blindness America in urging you to protect your eyes and your
children's eyes from excessive sun exposure by wearing sunglasses and
wide-brimmed hats. Please visit NetWellness for more information about
this important subject.

Department of the Month - Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation,
University of Cincinnati

The featured department for July is the Department of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation at the College of Medicine at University of
Cincinnati. Members of this department answer questions in the
Rehabilitation health topic.

According to the Association of Academic Physiatrists, "Physicians who
specialize in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation are called
"physiatrists". Physiatrists are specialists in the diagnosis and
treatment of patients of all ages in three major areas of medical care."
These are:
1.	Diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal injuries and pain
syndromes - These include sports and/or work injuries to degenerative
conditions as common as arthritis or low back pain.
2.	Electrodiagnostic medicine - Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
is the only specialty of medicine in which special training in
electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies is required. These
procedures are used for evaluation of various neurologic disorders.
3.	Rehabilitation of patients with severe impairments - The
physiatrist directs a comprehensive rehabilitation team of professionals
that may include physical therapists, occupational therapists,
recreational therapists, rehabilitation nurses, psychologists, social
workers, speech-language pathologists and others. Physiatrists treat
neurologic rehabilitation conditions including stroke, brain injury, and
spinal cord injury. Many other disabling conditions such as amputations,
multiple trauma, burns and sports injuries are treated as well.

Current NetWellness experts from the Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation are Mark Goddard, MD, Stephen Page, PhD, Valerie
Hill-Hermann, MS, OTR/L, Austin Nobunaga, MD, MPH, and Thomas Watanabe,
MD.

New Topic, Experts, and Overview - Cystic Fibrosis!

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is caused by a defective gene which tells the body
to produce abnormally thick and sticky fluid, called mucus. This mucus
builds up in the breathing passages of the lungs and the pancreas, the
organ that helps to break down and absorb food. This collection of
sticky mucus results in life-threatening lung infections and serious
digestion problems. The disease may also affect the sweat glands and a
man's reproductive system. The disease is the most common, deadly,
inherited disorder affecting Caucasians in the United States. It's more
common among those of Northern or Central European descent. Please visit
the Cystic Fibrosis health topic for more information and to ask one of
our experts a question about the subject.

NetWellness would like to recognize the experts who participate in
answering questions in this new topic: John S. Heintz, MD and Karen S.
McCoy, MD from The Ohio State University, and Patricia Joseph, MS, MD

also amenable to this therapy. For more information about lung
