With a growing number of corporate intranets and other electronic 
communications tools, companies risk inadvertently violating United 
States and international copyright laws. Copyright is a strict liability 
statute where neither ignorance nor inadvertence reduces liability.

*Critical Learning Questions*
- How can libraries explain to management, public relations and others 
the consequences of posting copyrighted materials on the intranet?
- How can corporate librarians avoid potentially costly mistakes?
- Is there any way to simplify the complicated requirements for 
compliance with the copyright law?
- Should corporate libraries assume the role of copyright police within 
the company?
- Are there steps a company can take to eliminate or reduce its 
liability for copyright infringement?
