RE: Use of Artwork for Present and Future Summer Reading
                 	Programs

DATE: November 9, 2006

The State Library of Ohio is part of the forty-two state Collaborative
Summer Library Program (CSLP). This consortium pools its resources to
support a nationwide summer reading program. Ohio has been part of this
program for three years now. We have participated in the following
programs:

*	Discover New Trails READ! - 2004
*	Dragons, Dreams, and Daring Deeds! - 2005
*	Paws, Claws, Scales and Tales - 2006

We will also be participating in the 2007 program, GET A CLUE @ YOUR
LIBRARY! and YNK (You Never Know) @ YOUR LIBRARY.

All of these programs utilize copyrighted artwork as part of the
program. CSLP, with assistance from its' vendor, Highsmith, contracts
with a well known children's artist to design this artwork.

CSLP has written a specific statement regarding use of its' copyrighted
artwork:

NEW RULES OF USE STATEMENT
"To deter unauthorized use of CSLP artwork to promote non-CSLP events
and programs by entities that are not member libraries, any CSLP member
who posts CSLP artwork on their website must make all attempts to code
the CSLP artwork so that it cannot be downloaded or copied from their
website."
In addition there is a link on the CSLP website which outlines "rules of
use" for libraries using the artwork - http://www.cslpreads.org/rou.htm
These "rules of use" are also found on page 379 of the 2007 GET A CLUE
manual as well as page 167 of the YOU NEVER KNOW manual. More
information on this can be found at the CSLP site at www.cslpreads.org

The CSLP executive board approved this statement that CSLP art needed to
be removed from websites unless the art is coded in a manner that does
not allow for it to be copied or downloaded. All CSLP artwork (found on
the order forms, posters, etc.) must be removed if it isn't coded.

This applies to all current 2006 summer artwork on library websites as
well as future artwork for the 2007 program and beyond.

If you choose to use CSLP art on your library's website, we suggest you
work in conjunction with the library's web development staff to ensure
that all CSLP art is coded in a manner which prevents copying or
downloading from the library's website.

Thanks for your help with this. Questions on this issue may be directed
to Ruth Metcalf at the email below.
