*/Will Hillenbrand/* is an award-winning author and illustrator whose
works include almost fifty picture books for young readers. In addition
to his own self-illustrated titles, he has also illustrated the works of
writers and retellers, including Eric Kimmel. Will Hillenbrand has lived
almost all of his life in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he grew up in a family
whose everyday routines centered around the neighborhood, his parents'
barbershop, and the local baseball diamond. To find out more, visit
Will's website <http://www.willhillenbrand.com>.

/Keynote Address: An Eye for a Story/
Experience the way folklore finds a face. You will hear and see excerpts
from a wide variety of Will's books. Discover how the illustrations
develop to embrace specific cultures that create an authentic world for
the setting, the story, and the reader.

/Meet the Illustrator Workshop/
In this informal session, Will will expand upon the practical reasons
for keeping a visual journal.

*/Eric Kimmel/* has wanted to be an author since he first discovered
back in kindergarten that people called authors make books. Eric has
published over fifty titles, many of which have won numerous state
awards, appeared on school and library recommended lists, and he has
also won the prestigious Caldecott Honor Medal and the Sydney Taylor
Picture Book Award. To find out more, visit Eric's website
<http://www.ericakimmel.com>.

/Keynote Address: Confronting the Enemy - Three Books for Tough Times/
What do we do when evil threatens? Confront it? Ignore it? Destroy it?
Eric offers three books with three possible answers. Which is the right one?

/Meet the Author Workshop/
Eric takes workshop participants through the steps by which an idea
becomes a book, presenting examples from his own work. If you thought it
was a simple, logical process, you're dead wrong! Bring any and all
questions for a freewheeling session.

      *Workshop Presenters*

*/Louise Borden: Field Notes and Travels - A Writer's Journey/*
Louis Borden has published twenty-two picture books. She makes frequent
school appearances, speaking about the writing process to students. A
history major in college, she has written several historical fiction
books about subjects ranging from Boston on the eve of the American
Revolution to the rescue of soldiers at Dunkirk during WWII. Her books
have received numerous honors and glowing reviews. A recent example of
her historical non-fiction is titled _The Journey that Saved Curious
George: the True Wartime Escape of Margaret and H.A. Rey_. During her
program, Louise will discuss the creative process, research, and travels
associated with writing her books. She will focus on the fictional and
nonfiction books that have European settings and will discuss her newest
WWII book, _Across the Blue Pacific_.

*/Ricardo Averback and William Doan: They Lived Happily Ever
After...What Then?/*
Ricardo Averbach currently serves as conductor of the Miami University
Symphony Orchestra, Oxford Chamber Orchestra, and the annual opera
production at Miami University. Dr. Averbach maintains professional
relationships with orchestras in Europe, Asia, and South America. In his
current research, he uses interdisciplinary projects as a way to develop
aesthetic standards in young people. William Doan received his MFA from
Virginia Commonwealth University and his Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve
University. Dr. Doan is well-recognized in the field of theater and many
of his productions have received numerous certificates of merit. His
co-authored book, _Prophets, Performance and Power_, was published in
2005 by T&T Clark International. In this program, Dr. Averbach and Dr.
Doan will show us how literature and music can work together to develop
aesthetic tastes in children. If children are surrounded by different
types of music, their aesthetic tastes will be influenced. A story will
be read with musical intervention from different aesthetical and
stylistic backgrounds.

*/Daryl Harris: Children's Literature via Dramatic Presentation/*
Daryl Harris is a professor in the Northern Kentucky University (NKU)
Department of Theater and Dance. He is deeply involved with the
Institute for Freedom Studies at NKU <http://www.nku.edu/%7Efreedom/>
where his responsibilities are to connect the fields of theater and
dance to the Underground Railroad Movement. The "educational theatre" he
presents to the NKU campus and local community groups connects themes of
the Underground Railroad Movement with current social problems in ways
that promote understanding and greater social harmony. He also presents
dramatic readings of children's books that address the Underground
Railroad Movement to local classrooms. In this program, Daryl will
present alternative ways to teach and present children's literature
through various forms of dramatic interpretations, including both solo
and group presentations.

*/Charlotte Decker: The Story Vine, Kamishibai and Mountain Patchwork -
Around the World in 80 Books/*
Young adult and children's literature are Charlotte Decker's passion.
Prior to joining the Children's Department of the Public Library of
Cincinnati and Hamilton County in 1989, she was the librarian at
Covington Latin School. She is a founding member of the Reviewers of
Young Adult Literature (ROYAL). Her many years of outstanding library
service to children and young adults earned her the Silver Gertie award
in 2004. Her presentation will demonstrate various ways to incorporate
stories and nonfiction about different cultures into the library and/or
classroom setting. A bibliography of resources and books will be provided.

*/Ellen Ford: Stories, Games, and Songs from Childhood/*
Ellen is an artist who travels the country creating programs to remind
us of our past and our wonderful heritage. She is the author of _The Day
Mom Stopped the Bus_; she is a musician on the hammered dulcimer; she is
a folk dancer, specializing in historic games and marches; and she is a
storyteller emphasizing multi-cultural stories. Ellen's works explore
our common links, enabling us to create a feeling of caring and
community in our schools and within our families. Ellen's program will
use the muscial arts and invite the audience to participate in historic
games, songs, and clapping dances. The delight in finding common threads
among these various activities will add to the discussion of recreation
within a cultural and historical theme.

ROYAL (Reviewers Of Young Adult Literature) is a Greater Cincinnati book
review group comprised of school and public librarians who meet
regularly to read and review newly published fiction and non-fiction

groups in your service area by presenting bilingual storytimes. Learn
how to make inroads into the multilingual community by identifying
appropriate community partners that can help with promoting and paying
for your storytimes. Then, discover the nuts and bolts of planning a
bilingual storytime as we present a short demonstration of a bilingual
