Speaker:
William J. Rothwell, Ph.D., SPHR, is Professor-in-Charge of Workforce
Education and Development on the University Park campus of The
Pennsylvania State University. In that capacity he heads up a graduate
program in human resource development, which is designed to prepare
people for careers in human resources, training, and organization
development. He is also President of Rothwell and Associates, inc. (see
www.rothwell-associates.com), a full-service consulting firm that offers
services in Succession Planning and Management.
Upon completing this morning session, participants will be able to:
* Understand why a crisis will soon exist based on demographic
change in the U.S. and in many other countries
* Know "what to do" and "where to start" in preparing for the loss
of experienced librarians
* Compare practices in their libraries to best practices
* Define succession planning and management and distinguish it
from traditional replacement planning
* Discuss the steps in a comprehensive model of succession
planning and management
* Review alternatives to succession planning and management to
meet staffing needs and work requirements
Upon completing this Afternoon session, participants will be able to:
* Define technical succession planning
* Distinguish technical succession planning from management
succession planning
* Describe a model to guide the launch of a technical succession
planning program and distinguish it from a model to guide the launch of
a management succession planning program
* Review your organization's practices to best practices in
technical succession planning
* Apply a step-by-step model to capture institutional memory,
distill it, and make it available in real time to next-generation
replacements
