Speaker(s)
*Melanie Deutsch* has been the Fiction Specialist at the Parma South
Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library since 1989. She is
responsible for the What to Read page on the Cuyahoga County Public
Library web site. Melanie has presented programs at PLA -- Phoenix 2002
(Weeding preconference and an individual session on weeding fiction) and
she has presented program at PLA -- Seattle 2004 (NF- RA program). In
addition, she has presented library programs in Michigan, Salt Lake
City, Delaware, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Wisconsin and all
over Ohio.
Melanie says, "I am the ultimate eclectic reader. I enjoy mysteries,
literary fiction, fantasy, SF, thrillers, the back of cereal boxes etc.
I also enjoy 'Non-Fiction that Reads like Fiction'"
Description
"But, I don't read NON-fiction!" Librarians may panic when asked to
recommend a good non-fiction book, but the basic skills of readers'
advisory service also apply to non-fiction. And yes, there are plenty of
"true" books that read like fiction. Explore these non-fiction parallels
and boost your library's circulation by using your entire collection
when doing readers' advisory.
*Program Objectives*
Objective 1: Participants will be able to recognize and utilize readers'
advisory techniques to provide non-fiction readers' advisory.
Objective 2: Participants will be able to identify the various
non-fiction subject areas that work best for readers' advisory and the
representative titles in each.
Objective 3: Participants will have a working bibliography and web
resources to provide further readers' advisory guidance.
Meal
Light snacks will be provided
Audience
This meeting is open to all library staff interested in reader's
advisory work!
