Speaker(s)
After a 22 year career in retail management, Mike Crumpton earned a MLS
at the University of Kentucky, worked as Circulation Services Manager at
Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County and for the past three
years has been the Director of Library Services for Wake Technical
Community College in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Mike feels that facilitating the right environment and creating drama in
the workplace, makes a huge difference to people in any environment.
Having a program of ongoing and interesting displays plays a large part
of that. In a retail setting, it is part of a purchasing decision, in
the library it creates patron interest and helps secure the notion that
a library is more than information, it is a place!
Description
For years retailers have used a concept called "Atmospherics" to guide
the use of facilities with regard to making purchases and decisions
involving displays, store design, signage, operational procedures, staff
training and many other attributes that they feel influence a customer's
buying decision. Libraries do not typically have the luxury to spend
money on these activities but can develop a program to make a difference
in their atmospherics, which can influence user's perceptions of the
library as a place.
This workshop will address the study of atmospherics and how principles
and ideas used in retail stores can be applied to library environments,
sometimes at very little cost, and will enhance your library's appeal so
patrons will want to visit and visit often. We will focus on basic
issues that appeal to any person's sense of wanting to visit and we'll
discuss the use of displays to create drama and an exciting experience
for very patron. Displays do not have to be expensive or require big
investments. We'll discuss how to keep patrons interested and involved
without blowing the budget.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be served
