   From Ugly Duckling to Beautiful Swan: Open Source Software Grows Up
  <http://www.swonlibraries.org/viewevent?id=1108>

Free/open source software has been around for a long time. Until
recently, however, much of this software lacked the usability and
features of its commercial counterparts. Today, many open source
projects have "grown up" and now have many benefits over commercial
software. More and more libraries are using open source and some are
even creating their own.

In this hands-on session, Glen Horton, Technology Coordinator at SWON
Libraries, will discuss several open source projects already being used
by libraries to supplement or replace costly, proprietary software:

    * Staff and public PCs
    * Online catalogs
    * Wireless hotspots
    * Digital collections
    * Social software (blogs, wikis, instant messaging)
