Can anyone help us identify this book for a patron?

He read the book in the 1940s. He thinks the title was THE FOREST FIRE but
he's not sure.

The main character was an adult man. He thinks it was an adult book, not a
juvenile book.

This is the plot: A man is caught in a forest fire. He has to jump into a
lake and breathe through a reed to survive. After he gets out of the lake
he gets his foot caught in a bear trap. He is injured and has to stay in
the forest for the winter. He has to improvise to survive the winter.
After the winter he is able to leave the forest.

Please let us know if you know a title and/or an author.

Thanks!
