Keynote Presentation--Lizanne Payne
Shared Library Storage and the Future of Print Collections
Most library storage facilities in use today are owned and operated by
individual universities; only about 20% of the facilities are shared
among multiple libraries. A number of factors are encouraging the
development of additional shared facilities or shared access agreements.
The time is right to develop regional or national print repository
networks for collective management and preservation of library
collections at the system level, while freeing shelving space for new
materials at the local campus level.
Michael Upfold
How to Run a Storage Facility
This presentation will focus on the acquisition, implementation, and
operation of CONStor, a 'do-it-yourself' storage facility, which is
located in an existing facility, and is operated with minimal expense
and staffing. The facility has been in use for over seven years, during
which time library priorities have changed, as have the theory and
practices regarding the storage of little-used materials. The Five
Colleges of Ohio are also members of the OhioLINK system, so that
developments in the larger shared system also have an effect on current
practices and planning for the future.
Judy Ruttenberg
TRLN Single Copy Program
Members of the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN) have
decades-long agreements in place for print cooperative collection
development, and a more recent portfolio of collectively negotiated
shared electronic resources. With each member of TRLN committed to
participation in both LOCKSS and Portico, and an off-site storage
agreement between two major partners in the consortium, a Task Group was
created to build a formal Single Copy serials program for the
consortium. This presentation will focus on the development of policies
for retention of last or single copies among research libraries --
including selection of titles, equity in contributions, and services.
Other issues include a public-private school partnership, the impact of
de-duplication on ARL rank, and the broader context of print and
electronic preservation.
Panel and Audience Discussion: What are the Issues for Kentucky?
Following the prepared remarks, the audience will be invited to ponder
the storage issues in Kentucky. All presenters will be available on the
panel to add comments and suggestions.
