SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE FOR GRADUATE LIBRARY DEGREE

The Akron-Summit County Public Library announces the establishment of
the C. Blake McDowell Jr. Librarian Scholarship, which is being funded
through a bequest from the estate of former library board member C.
Blake McDowell, Jr. The Library annually will award one scholarship to
cover full tuition and fees for graduate work in library and information
science at the Kent State University School of Library and Information
Science.

While the primary intent of the scholarship program is to increase the
presence of minority librarians in the Library, all qualified candidates
may apply. African-American candidates will receive particular
preference due to the historic under-representation of African-Americans
in the professional library workforce. Additionally, Akron-Summit
County Public Library employees will receive special consideration, but
the application process is open to all those attending or accepted for
admission to the Kent State University School of Library and Information
Science.

As a condition of the scholarship, the recipient's course of graduate
study must include coursework in public librarianship.

In addition to the scholarship, the recipient will be appointed to a
temporary internship position as a part-time Public Service Assistant
(22.5 hours per week) in an area of the Akron-Summit County Public
Library system determined appropriate by the Library Administration.
This appointment will expire when the recipient is hired into an
available professional position within the Library.

Once a recipient is within 6 credit hours of attaining the MLIS, and has
demonstrated acceptable performance in the internship position, he or
she will be hired into an available professional librarian position
which is appropriate to his or her educational emphasis and training.
Once appointed to this professional position, the recipient will be
required to work for a minimum of two years for the Akron-Summit County
Public Library.

The application deadline is midnight on July 20, 2008.
