According to the 2000 U.S. Census there were 648,493 or 6.1% Ohio
residents who spoke a language other than English at home and 234,459 or
2.2% who spoke English "less than very well".  Librarians in Ohio and
other states can find it a challenge to help patrons who speak little or
no English.

 

Because of this challenge, the Lincoln Trails Libraries System in
Illinois pioneered PolyTalk, a program funded by the Illinois State
Library through an LSTA grant to assist patrons who speak little or no
English.  As part of the program, PolyTalk Language Kits were designed
to enable librarians and patrons "to work through a series of picture
and bilingual cards using a point and read system" for 30 languages
commonly spoken in Illinois.

the kit) and the PolyTalk volunteer interpreters network to help
