Joyce Saricks, Readers' Advisroy Guru
Donald Ray Pollock, Author
Program Description:
Back to the Book is back by popular demand this will be the 9th year for
this program. The program will start off with a first time Ohio author,
Donald Ray Pollock author of Knockemstiff. Spanning a period from the
midsixties to the late nineties, the stories in Knockemstiff feature a
cast of recurring characters who are woebegone, baffled, and
depravedbut irresistibly, undeniably real. Rendered in the American
vernacular with vivid imagery and a wry, dark sense of humor, these
thwarted and sometimes violent lives jump off the page at the reader
with inexorable force.
The Wall Street Journal says "Early reviews by publications such as
Publishers Weekly have been encouraging. In theme and tone,
"Knockemstiff" is related to the works of writers such as Chris Offutt,
Daniel Woodrell, and William Gay, who write about characters living at
the margins of society."
For the remainder of the day we will join readers' advisor guru Joyce
Saricks for a day filled with what today's librarians need to know to
help readers of books as well as those who find the satisfaction of a
good story in audio and video formats. Learn about the appeal of audio
books, how to become comfortable with this format, what listeners look
for, and how to make suggestions to fans. Expand your readers' advisory
knowledge beyond the fiction collection to the whole library. Discover
techniques that help you add nonfiction, audio, and video to your
readers' advisory repertoire. And because all of this demands more time
than any of us has, expect to learn techniques that will help you keep
up with what's happening in the world of books and readers.
