Who, Why and How YA? Programming for Young Adults
Program Date: 03/17/2009
Program Time:9:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Speaker:
Beth Gallaway was named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker in 2006 for her
work in advocating for videogames in libraries. She is an independent
library trainer/consultant specializing in gaming, technology, and youth
services, and is a YALSA certified Serving the Underserved (SUS)
trainer. Her book Game On! is forthcoming from Neal-Schuman in 2008.
Program Description:
Morning Session: "Who YA/ Why YA/ How YA" with Beth Gallaway
Call them what you like: millenials, gamers, twixters, or generation Y
-- by 2010, there will be an estimated 34.9 million of them. How will
your library rise to serve young adults?
By the end of this session, participants will:
* Identify characteristics of the young adult demographic
* Test new evaluation skills by editing a written review
* Define why service to young adults is not just important but
essential
* Discover best practices in serving young adults
* Create a plan of service to this historically underserved group
Afternoon Session: Join your colleagues for a peer learning session and
discuss popular programs you have hosted with other YA librarians
throughout Ohio. The afternoon presentation will include a demonstration
of the intricate art of henna tattoos. You are sure to come away with
great ideas for summer reading and other special events throughout the
year!
