As you upgrade windows you may find your older doc/photo/negative/slide
scanner may no longer work.

This program may help.
VueScan supports over 1200 flatbed and film scanners and 321 digital
camera raw file types, and is available for Mac OS X, Windows and Linux

There is a free download for testing that allows scanning but places $ $
$ $ on the image until purchased.
It is a good way to test before buying.

BTW
It works with an  HP Scanjet 5370 scanner  on Vista Home Premium.
It is interesting that you can preset for the type of film used.    IE:
Kodak Gold 400 Gen 5
