The Tuscarawas County Public Library will be hosting award-wining and
nationally acclaimed author and historian Les Standiford at the Main
library in New Philadelphia on Thursday, December 10th at 7:00 PM for the
final installment of the library's 2009 Author Series. In his program
entitled, "The Second Coming of Christmas," Standiford will
discuss the little known drama behind the writing of Charles Dickens' A
Christmas Carol, a tale that has come to be synonymous with the season for
many. Though it is hard to imagine, the tale that literally transformed a
nearly forgotten holiday into a Victorian extravaganza almost did not
happen. Following a slide-illustrated talk and a question and answer
session, Standiford will sign copies of his books, including The Man Who
Invented Christmas: How Charles Dickens Rescued his Career and Revived our
Holiday Spirits, which was named a New York Times "Editors Choice" in
2008.

The author of fifteen books including the John Deal Mystery Series,
Standiford's Meet You in Hell: Andrew Carnegie, Henry Clay Frick and the
Bitter Partnership that Transformed America was the publisher's nominee
for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 2005. Standiford has
received the Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Award, the Frank
O'Connor Award for Short Fiction, and Fellowships from the National
Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. A
native Ohioan, Standiford has a B.A. from Muskingum College and a Ph.D.
from the University of Utah. He is a professor of English and Director of
the Creative Writing Program at Florida International University in Miami,
where he lives with his wife Kimberly, a psychotherapist, and their three
children.

Admission is free and all are welcome. A book signing and refreshments
will follow the program. For more information, call 330-364-4474.
