Please excuse multiple postings: Message to Public Libraries

Project Compass continues its work to bolster library-based responses
to communities impacted by the recession, thanks to the award of a
follow-on grant from IMLS. The team from WebJunction and the State
Library of North Carolina will build on the momentum created in the
first year with a variety of strategies to reach and support library
staff who are guiding the struggling workforce.

Reaching the Highest Unemployment States - Ohio's Participation

Through a careful data analysis, the project has identified a limited
number of states with the highest unemployment numbers over a 14-month
period and has invited them to participate in the most concentrated
effort of the grant program. Ohio has been selected as a participant,
with the State Library coordinating the Ohio program. As a participant,
Ohio will send two trainers to a Train-the-Trainer Institute in February
2011, at which the Project Compass team will provide the curriculum and
training to enable the trainers from each target state to deliver
workforce recovery workshops in the highest unemployment counties in
their states.

Eight workshops will take place in the spring and early summer. State
Library staff is in the process of identifying locations and dates.
Once the trainers return from the Institute details will be finalized
and workshop registration posted. The Project Compass team's analysis
identified 79 Ohio counties, encompassing 221 public libraries, with
unemployment rates over 9 percent. Those public libraries in high
unemployment counties will have their attendance subsidized through the
IMLS grant. Anyone will be welcome to attend the workshops, but the
subsidy will be limited to one staff member from the eligible public
libraries.

Reaching Library Staff Nationally Beyond the Target States

While in-person workshops will only take place in a selected number of
critical need states, the Project Compass program is designed to reach
across the nation with support and resources for all public library
staff serving the unemployed. There are three strategies to accomplish
this: providing programs and presentations at spring and fall 2011 state
library conferences at no cost to the state library association;
development of an online version of the workforce recovery workshop
curriculum, which will be accessible by all library staff; and,
continuing to build the body of resources in the online community of
practice at http://www.webjunction.org/workforce-resources
<http://whatcounts.com/t?r=850&c=2439535&l=191860&ctl=348FA76:FD9035742C
5DBAD5ED8ED876199946DE5341F9C15CC16565&> . Free webinar programming will
be offered that provide current and timely access to workforce recovery
topics for all who are interested.

The Project Compass team knows that providing face-to-face and continued
online touch points is key to keeping library staff engaged and
energized as they persist in their efforts to support the under- and
unemployed.
