Thanks to everyone for sending great ideas to promote Friends memberships. Here are the results:

Our library card vendor suggests a Friends library card-there would be no extra charge for the extra design (Dasher Printing: adasher at carolina.rr.com, 704-542-0147)

Friends are allowed two members-only events at no charge in the library meeting room (normally only available for meetings open to the public).

10% discount at all book sales

Volunteers receive a token of appreciation at certain levels of hours of donated time, plus a book plate in the book of their choice recognizing the volunteer hours, as well as a press release listing those who reached a new level for the year.

Friends who volunteer at the ongoing book sale get first pick as items go on sale. Friends also host programs and provide refreshments, to make organization more visible.

As a component of their Friends group, one library has the Friends' Community Players, a performing arts group that "brings books to life" at an annual literary arts festival. The group also presents children's programs, such as a Mad Hatter's Tea Party, an outdoor Fairy Fest and Christmas plays.

Friends-only preview sale, with memberships sold at the door. A check box is provided so the Friends know which new members are interested in being contacted about events and receiving newsletters.

At $50 membership level, Friends receive a $5 book sale coupon, and a $10 coupon for those at the $100 level, other levels are being considered: coupon for book bag at $25 (basic) level, personal tour of the award-winning library at $250, 2 free memberships at $500, 4 free memberships at $1000. Considering adding one or two Friends-only events.

Buy one, get one free privilege at the book sale, and free admission to 3-4 yearly events sponsored by the Friends as fundraisers.

Friends receive monthly library newsletter mailed to their home-otherwise the newsletter can be picked up at the library or viewed online.

Director takes Friends on a short trip each year-for example, to a historical location or a large library.

Imprinted canvas book bag is offered as an incentive to renew membership.

Jr. Friends group members (10-12 years old) take part in parades, decorate cookies and ornaments, and have special members-only events such as watching a pop concert video.

The membership card has x-number of free copies and free coffee, with an expiration date.
Discounts on special events, such as bus trips to author visits or wine tasting, that have a fee, and speakers for members-only events.
10% discount on fines.

Fine waivers: x-number of fine forgiveness passes.

Tote bags.

Also, this information on Friends membership drive: Advertisement in local paper during drive weeks, membership form on bookmarks given to each patron at checkout, printed brochures with membership form, renewal letter sent to current members, membership form on website (to be printed and brought or mailed in).
