*JOB TITLE:* Program Services Coordinator/Children’s Librarian

Location: Grand Valley Public Library aka The Orwell Library Association

JOB STATUS: Hourly, Part-Time Position, Non-exempt

Wages: Wage commensurate with qualification & experience.

HOURS: Hours (set and schedule by Director and recommendation by Board)
per week; must be available to work at least 1 evening per week and
rotating Saturday hours

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the
Director within general procedural and policy guidelines.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Oversees volunteers.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Program Services Coordinator/Children’s Librarian is responsible for
all facets of children’s/teen/adult services for the Grand Valley Public
Library, including development and management of the youth collection,
youth related community outreach/programs and youth related reference
responsibilities. Provides direct customer service, including reader’s
advisory, circulation and reference services. Program Services
Coordinator/Children’s Librarian acknowledges and accepts the Ohio
Ethics Law and related statutes, respects confidentiality and maintains
the integrity of the Grand Valley Public Library.

Principle Priorities: Duties may be assigned or modified by Director.

EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:

  * Conducts storytimes and other programming for all ages from children
    and teens to seniors, including the Summer Reading Program.
  * Assists in maintaining children’s and young adult collection area's
    appearance, order and age of collection.
  * Assists in creating displays, bulletin boards and signage, usually
    for children and teens but occasionally for the library in general.
  * Maintains log of programs provided and attendance.
  * Develops and maintains communication with area schools and
    organizations that serve children and teens.
  * Provides direct customer service to all library users including
    circulation, reader’s advisory and reference. Assists customers in
    the use of copier, fax, computers, and other equipment.
  * Participates in workshops, meetings and conferences to enhance
    children’s and youth services.
  * May provide outreach services to children and teens throughout the
    community.
  * Performs other general library duties and participates in library
    special projects as needed.
  * Provides educational support to school age children, (home school,
    public and private classrooms), and educational organizations.
  * Provides library tours, special story times and book talks.
  * Provides instruction on library skills, research skills and usage as
    needed.
  * Maintains a neat, clean, functional and inviting youth area.
    Provides a welcoming and safe atmosphere.
  * Provides research and assistance for homework assignments and
    individual pursuits, via the physical collection, Internet sources
    and Interlibrary Loan.
  * Provides off-site school programs, such as storytelling and book
    talks, assemblies and classroom and teacher visits. Coordinates
    program planning with school librarians to ensure complementary
    services to students, approved by Director and the Board.
  * Plans, prepares, promotes and implements a summer reading program.
  * Designs, develops, implements, and budgets other youth outreach
    programs for the library. Creates a planning template for each program.
  * Actively participates in pursuing alternative funding sources to
    help fund the youth outreach programs and purchases materials needed.
  * Promotes the library and programs through personal communication and
    coordinates press releases and print communication needs.
  * Coordinates youth outreach programs with agencies being served.
  * Collaborates with Director about the direction and scope of the
    youth outreach program.




Working conditions and physical demands:

Performs work most often in a climate-controlled environment; may be
required to participate in outdoor events occasionally. Routinely works
with computers. Must be able to lift light to medium weights, e.g.
lifting books and audiovisual equipment and pushing book carts. Position
entails bending, stooping, reaching and standing on a daily basis. Some
degree of stress in public contact. Must be able to deal with frequent
interruptions. Must have the ability to communicate effectively; having
the ability to talk with clarity, and be able to listen accurately.
Typing ability and computer skills are essential. Required to drive for
training opportunities, school visits, etc. Position requires the
ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends,
and requires periodic participation and attendance at library events and
meetings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: High School Graduate. One year’s experience
working in a library with children and teens preferred, but not
necessary. Preferred training and experience with the Ohio Ready to Read
program, but not necessary.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Essential Skills/Abilities: demonstrates knowledge of child development
and the reading acquisition process; knowledge and appreciation of
children’s and young adult literature, audiovisual materials, computer
resources, and other materials that constitute a balanced, relevant
youth collection; knowledge of reference materials and other library
resources which may serve the needs of children and their care givers;
demonstrates good interpersonal skills in meeting with children,
parents, staff, and community; demonstrates good active listening
skills. Must be an effective and capable public speaker. Must possess
considerable initiative in devising new and original youth programs.
Must be able to conduct multiple age story times or programs with
sensitivity to the various needs of the audience and with age
appropriate materials and activities. Must be knowledgeable in the use
of the computer and willing to learn new programs. Clear criminal
record. Must be capable of reading and writing English. Must be able to
follow directions and perform work duties with limited supervision. A
working knowledge of office procedures is desirable.

PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES: Ability to provide services to the public in a
courteous manner and maintain composure in handling complaints; must
enjoy working with children and teens; maintain neat personal
appearance. The position requires a commitment to service excellence;
the ability to see the big picture of the library; the ability to work
well with others in a team; the ability to provide leadership and plan,
prioritize and focus on what is critical; commitment to lifelong
learning; recognition of the value of professional networking; and the
ability to remain flexible and positive in a time of continuing change.
