[OPLINLIST] Blu-ray security revisited

Everyone,

A few weeks ago, I asked the collective mind about security overlays on
Blu-ray disks. People said that they didn't use them, but didn't cite
strong evidence that it was a bad idea. It seemed more like a sense that
the security overlays/gates combination was too weak to bother with
anyway.

However, we rely a lot on self-check machines, and our machines don't play
well with security cases. So we looked further.

I talked to 3M, and the person I talked to said that the relevant
technical standard called for Blu-ray discs to spin at about the same
speed as standard DVDs. Therefore, while they hadn't tested their
overlays specifically on Blu-rays, he'd expect that problem rates would be
about the same.

On the strength of that, we decided to do our own very small-scale
testing. We put overlays on a couple of Blu-rays and asked five staff
members to try them on their machines. A week later and no problems
reported, we've decided to go ahead and use them.

We start putting Blu-rays out March 1st. I'll let everyone know what
happens.
