Due to retirement, Shelby County Libraries seeks a qualified, enthusiastic
person for Director of Library Services for Children.  This position
requires a MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited school.  Responsibilities include
overseeing operations of the Children's Department including programming for
children 0 - 12 years of age, supervision of children's staff, and
maintaining children's collections for the six locations throughout the
system.  This position is one of a seven member Senior Management team and
reports directly to the Executive Director.  Evening and weekends are
required based on the needs of the library.  Position is full time and
salary begins at $19.50/hour depending on experience and qualifications.

TITLE:  Director of Library Services for Children

 

PRIME FUNCTION:

 

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Director is responsible for
interpreting and implementing library policies and procedures, recommending,
designing, supervising, and evaluating an active children's program to meet
the needs and wants of children ages 0 - 12 years of age and child related
programs for parents, caregivers and teachers with the goals and objectives
established by the Library Board and Library Administration.  Provide
reference and reader's advisory services.  Develop and maintain a reference
and circulating collection for juvenile patrons.  Responsible for the
interviewing, hiring, training, and supervising of staff assigned to the
Children's Room. Responsible to oversee children's programs and services
offered in all locations.

 

FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Plans and conducts age appropriate programs for children and their families
to encourage reading in an effort to create lifelong readers.

Evaluates and selects materials of interest to children to satisfy their
informational, educational, and recreational needs for all library locations
in the system.

Performs reference and reader's advisory services in person and telephone
using materials in a variety of formats.  Compiles bibliographies and
develops library user guides. Assists patrons in the use of the online
catalog and other electronic tools.

Maintains contact with and provides services to local organizations,
schools, and educational groups serving children.

Seeks collaborations and partnerships with community groups with common
goals.

Hires, trains, and supervises the staff assigned to the Children's Room
insuring that department staff are responsive to patrons in a consistent,
friendly and professional manner.

Interprets the Library's policies and procedures to the public in a customer
friendly manner and resolves customer complaints in a pleasant, timely and
professional manner.  

Recommends policies and procedures on the operations of the Children's
Department.

Serves as an advocate of children and reading in the library and in the
community.

Requisitions departmental supplies and capital improvements as needed.

Uses computers and the Internet effectively for providing library service.

Examines, interprets and anticipates community needs and develops programs
and services for children.

Plans and/or creates displays to enhance the Library collection and promote
reading to insure that the environment within the Children's area is
pleasant, friendly and services meets the needs of patrons.

Attends workshops, conferences, and meetings and reads professional
literature to stay current in the field.

Serves on committees, as requested, to enhance the profession.

Reports problems and/or concerns regarding maintenance and janitorial
services within the department to the building supervisor for resolution.

Maintains knowledge of the circulation system in order to assist at
circulation desk.

Participates in the routine desk responsibilities as needed.  

Hold regular meetings with the staff assigned to the branch locations to
discuss, plan, and evaluate services, materials, and programs provided in
the branch facilities.

Educational:

 

MLS from an ALA accredited school

Demonstrates creativity through a variety of programs and storytelling
techniques.

Demonstrates problem solving and decision making techniques.

Ability and willingness to work evenings and weekends.

Knowledge of the Library's policies and procedures.

Possesses independent judgment in order to set priorities and work
independently.

Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills to deal effectively with the
public and staff.

Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills.

Ability to train, direct and supervise staff.

Ability to independently plan, analyze and structure staff assignments to
provide efficient and effective library service.

Willingness to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to
incorporate them into existing practices.

Possesses a positive work attitude.
