[OPLINLIST] Does your inbox need a tune-up?

*Why don’t you respond to all of your emails as soon as they come in? 
Because that’s a terrible idea.* You have other work that needs to get 
done, and you shouldn’t interrupt it every time an email arrives. Some 
emails require research or work before they can be answered. Some emails 
don’t really require a response at all.

*On the other hand, reading an email and leaving it in your inbox 
indefinitely can leave responses late or even lost.* If you read your 
emails but don’t do anything with them, you keep handing that entire 
stack to your future self. Which need responses or other action? Which 
belong to a project? Which do you need to hold onto forever, and which 
can you delete?

Be nice to your future self. *Create a workflow to handle incoming 
email.* Create folders for ongoing projects and use them. Create filters 
for mailing lists that automatically put those emails into a folder. 
Create a “THIS WEEK” folder for emails that need a 
soon-but-not-immediate reply and a calendar reminder to check that 
folder on Friday morning. Stick with your system, and you’ll find email 
easier to manage.
