[OPLINLIST] Affordable Care Act: Resources and Training

The State Library of Ohio has been working with the Chief Officers of State Library Agencies (COSLA), Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), WebJunction, the Ohio Library Council (OLC), and other partners to provide information, resources, and training opportunities to Ohio libraries regarding the Affordable Care Act.  Here are a few updates for Ohio libraries.

We have created an ACA page<http://www.library.ohio.gov/aca> on our website where Ohio libraries can go to find the latest information and training opportunities.

There are several upcoming training opportunities available for Ohio libraries.

*        WebJunction will host a webinar on Wednesday, August 28 at 1 PM, Meaningful Use: Libraries connecting patrons to ACA resources.  This webinar will explore strategies for libraries to identify ACA resources, hear from libraries that are working to prepare for patron requests, and obtain key policy and resource updates from ACA experts. *        On Tuesday, September 10 at 1 PM, join Ruth Holst, Director, and Samanthi Hewakapuge, Consumer Health Coordinator, from the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region for a webinar entitled "Affordable Care Act: Resources for Librarians".  This one-hour webinar will provide an overview about the Affordable Care Act, the health insurance marketplace, and where to find training and official resources from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid.  In addition, participants will learn about MedlinePlus.gov, the National Library of Medicine's consumer health database, and consumer health basics in general.  More information on how to view coming soon.  This webinar will be recorded.

*        Mark your calendars for "Assisting the Public with Health Insurance Changes", a webinar given by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.  This webinar will be given on Wednesday, September 4, 11AM-12 PM, Thursday, September 5, 2 - 3 PM, Monday, September 23, 2-3 PM, Tuesday, September 24, 2-3 PM.  More information on content and how to register is coming soon.  These webinars will be recorded.

*        The State Library is also working with Don Boozer, KnowItNow Coordinator, to provide a recorded session called "Privacy, Difficult Conversations, and Drawing the Line: Considerations for Librarians Assisting Patrons with Implementation of the Affordable Care Act".
The State Library will keep you updated on the details of these training opportunities, as well as any others that may along.

On August 15, Health and Human Services announced<http://www.cms.gov/Newsroom/MediaReleaseDatabase/Press-Releases/2013-Press-Releases-Items/2013-08-15.html> grants to organizations that will serve as certified Navigators for health insurance. These Navigators will be trained by the federal government and will provide in-person assistance to individuals. The State Library compiled the list of Ohio Navigators<http://library.ohio.gov/sites/default/files/Navigator%20Grant%20Recipients%20-%20OHIO.pdf>.

Lastly, the Ohio Library Council has provided the following notice that libraries could post to communicate to the public about library staff assistance.:
"The Affordable Care Act includes sweeping changes and a number of options in healthcare coverage. There are a wide variety of resources available online that provide information about these options, and how to choose what is best for you. The staff of the ______________ Public Library can direct patrons to those resources.

Making the correct healthcare choices requires an understanding of each person's or family's unique health and financial circumstances. Members of the ______________ Public Library staff are not trained or licensed to provide advice or to assist you in selecting a specific health plan, but can provide information and direction to public resources about the Affordable Care Act that will help you make your own choices."

We will continue to work with our partners to provide information and resources to help you respond to patron requests for assistance in understanding and navigating new health insurance options.
