[OPLINLIST] Kent State SLIS alumni making their mark

Kent State SLIS alumni have been busy making their mark on their chosen career fields over the past few months. Below are some highlights of their recent achievements. Read more (or submit your own updates) at http://www.kent.edu/slis/alumni/index.cfm. 

Kemberly (Meiners) Lang, M.L.S. '88, of London, Ohio, was recently selected as Curator of Corporate Heritage at OCLC located in Dublin, Ohio. In this position, Kemberly manages the OCLC Archive collections in both their physical and digital formats. Currently, the digital archive is maintained using CONTENTdm with non-restrictive items searchable via the OCLC WorldCat database.

Catherine Hakala-Ausperk, M.L.S. '91, of Chagrin Falls, Ohio, has been named editor of "By the Book," a professional book reviews' column published in Public Libraries. (Anyone interested in reviewing new library science books can contact Cathy at chakalaausperk at gmail.com.) She is executive director of the Northeast Ohio Regional Library System.

Carolyn Hank, M.L.I.S. '04, Ph.D., of Chapel Hill, N.C., has been appointed as assistant professor in the University of Tennessee School of Information Sciences. She joins the UT faculty from McGill University where she was assistant professor and acting coordinator for the archival studies program. As a member of the Digital Curation Professional Institute faculty, she also serves as an adjunct instructor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Hank was awarded her Ph.D. in 2011 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her dissertation was titled "Scholars and Their Blogs: Characteristics, Preferences, and Perceptions Impacting Digital Preservation." She received the Academic Achievement Award for the Epsilon Chapter of Beta Phi Mu (UNC) in May of 2012 and the Outstanding Adjunct Teaching Award (UNC) in May of 2011.  In June of 2010 she was awarded the Eugene Garfield Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship from Beta Phi Mu. She will begin teaching courses in the spring 2013 semester and will continue her research focus in digital curation and archival studies at UT.  

Sara Sampson, M.L.I.S. '04, has been appointed as an adjunct instructor at the University of North Carolina School of Information and Library Science. She will be teaching the Law Libraries and Legal Information course. Sara is also the Deputy Director of the Law Library and a Clinical Assistant Professor of Law at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Joenna (Wolfe) Cynkar, M.L.I.S. '07, of Dublin, Ohio, has been named the Program Coordinator for Ohio State University's Department of Psychiatry. Jo began her LIS career as a Children's Librarian at the Worthington Libraries (she was hired while doing her practicum there) and was promoted to Manager of Youth Services at Worthington only two years later in 2009. This latest career move represents a step outside of the LIS field but draws directly on the program management skills and experience she gained during her time at the Worthington Libraries.

Michelle Miller, M.L.I.S. '11, of Jamestown, Ohio, has been named Assistant Principal of Xenia Christian Middle and High School. She previously worked as the Assistant to the Director of Campus Activities at Cedarville, as secretary to the principal of Xenia Christian High School, and at Greene County Public Library. http://xeniagazette.com/main.asp?Search=1&ArticleID=176964&SectionID=2&SubSectionID=4&S=1 

Ashlee (Clark) Tominey, M.L.I.S. '12, of Columbus, Ohio, has been promoted to the position of Library Development Consultant with an emphasis in special project coordination at the State Library of Ohio. Ashlee's responsibilities will include coordinating Ohio's participation in ILEAD USA, supporting Library Leadership Ohio, and helping libraries with the development of strategic plans. She will also help Ohio libraries promote, develop, and assess their workforce development projects and form collaborative relationships with organizations and government agencies supporting workforce development and the economically impacted. Ashlee has been with the State Library of Ohio for the past nine years, serving as Executive Secretary to the State Librarian for the last six.  She has also worked at the Ohioana Library Association and Ohio University's Alden Library. Ashlee also was recently appointed to the Ohio Library Council's Library Education Committee and is an active member of the 2012 class of Library Leadership Ohio.
