It’s Thanksgiving! A time to be with family so they can ask you all the
tech support questions they’ve been saving up. This year, do them an
extra favor and help them create better passwords.
A good password is long and unique to each account and isn’t easily
guessed. Yes, people still use “12345678” and “password”. These accounts
are very easily accessed, since they’re in the dictionaries that hackers
use to try to get into accounts.
Adobe recently fell victim to hackers, with 130 million passwords of
active and inactive users stolen. That includes everyone who has used
Adobe Digital Editions to access library ebooks, by the way. You can
read more about it and see the top 20 most common passwords people used
for their Adobe accounts
<http://mashable.com/2013/11/05/20-most-popular-passwords-adobe/>.
If you used the same password for your Adobe account and your email
account, that’s extra bad news. That hacker could access your email,
since your email address may have been stolen along with the password.
With access to your email account, they can reset passwords for
high-value websites like banks, which often validate password changes
through email. Scary, right?
Protect yourself better by creating a password around 20 characters
long, and choose multiple, unrelated words. Even better, create a
combination of words, numbers and special characters. You can even use
your own pattern like this one: special character, word, numbers,
special character, word. Like this: “%shatter61103+Zinc” which, because
it’s odd, is actually fairly easy to remember.
Next, use software like LastPass <https://lastpass.com/> or 1Password
<https://agilebits.com/onepassword> to securely store your passwords and
generate new, strong passwords for you automatically. With them, you
just need one strong password to get you into the software, and they
store the rest. From shopping sites to email logins to my library card,
I’m currently storing over 400 passwords in 1Password.
Get them using better passwords, and then you can start trying to
explain Instagram selfies.
