[OPLINLIST] Five Ways to Remember

Planning library programs means planning for the unexpected. This 
includes programming for the elderly, where your audience may include 
people with dementia. How do you design a program that’s interesting for 
the group and accessible to those with dementia or similar conditions?

One idea is to engage each of the senses. Play music that fits the theme 
you’ve chosen. Encourage participants to bring related objects that 
people could pass around or food they could share. Show images in books 
or with a projector; when you can, use photographs instead of 
illustrations, and ask people to share their memories.

A company named BiFolkal <http://bifolkal.org/> has a variety of 
multimedia kits made especially for this demographic. A quick survey of 
the kits’ themes and contents is a great way to generate ideas on themes 
you could choose, items you could bring and activities you could lead.
