The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award Council is pleased to announce the winners of the 2014 Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards:

● Grades K-2: Carnivores by Aaron Reynolds (author) and Dan Santat (illustrator) (Chronicle Books, 2013)

● Grades 3-5: Escape From Mr. Lemoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein (Random House Books for Young Readers, 2013 )

● Grades 6-8: Perfect Season (a Football Genius novel) by Tim Green (HarperCollins, 2013)

● Teen: The Fault In Our Stars by John Green (Dutton, 2012)

Each of these books won the highest number of votes out of the five nominees in its category, in an online voting process by young readers all across the state of Ohio. Nominations for the 2014 Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Awards were held from January 1, 2014 to March 10, 2014. To be eligible for nomination, a book must have been published in the United States in the previous two years. Voting was held between October 1, 2014 and November 10, 2014.

The Buckeye Children’s and Teen Book Award program is designed to encourage children in Ohio to read literature critically, to promote teacher and librarian involvement in children's literature programs, and to commend authors of such literature. It was established in 1981 through a collaborative effort of the Ohio Council of the International Reading Association, The Ohio Educational Library Media Association, The Ohio Council of Teachers of English and Language Arts, The Ohio Library Council, and The State Library of Ohio. It is one of the few statewide readers’ choice awards in which students nominate titles as well as vote for the winners.

A copy of each of the winning books with the BCTBA seal will be added to the BCTBA archives, housed at the Kent State University School of Library and Information Sciences Reinberger Children’s Center in Kent, Ohio.

Beginning with this award year, the nominations period for the Buckeye Children's and Teen Book Awards will be extended to a year-round schedule. Nominations for the 2015 award are now open on the Buckeye Book Award website; nominations for 2015 will end on March 10, 2015. On March 15, nominations for the 2016 award will become open and run through March 10, 2016. To be eligible, a book must have been published within the previous two years of the award (the correct years for each award will be indicated on the nominations survey). With this change, students will be able to nominate a new book as soon as they've read it, including during the voting period.

Visit the BCTBA website: www.bcbookaward.info<http://www.bcbookaward.info> for further information on the voting process and past winners, to find extension ideas, author information, Common Core connections, and other literary links. If you have any questions please contact the BCTBA Council President using the information below.

Sincerely,
