FWIW    You might find  Bar Code Basics Book.pdf interesting also.
Sort of a sales tool but some good information included.

Got it from DataLogic  when doing DHL, RPS, UPS, etc. start ups for 
Mettler-Toledo around 2003 (+ - some years)
M-T actually did bar code jobs since the late 80's, if I remember right.
Depending on the equipment, we used either Accu-Sort or DataLogic to read the 
package bar codes.
