[OPLINLIST] State Library Board approves $95, 840 in federal Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA grants to six libraries and organizations

The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce that the State Library Board recently awarded $95,840 in federal Institute of Museum and Library Services Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA)<http://www.imls.gov/programs/purposes_and_priorities_of_lsta.aspx> grants to six libraries and organizations. "We were very happy to be able to make competitive grant funds available once again," expressed State Library Beverly Cain.  "The quality of the proposals we received was outstanding and we are looking forward to watching as the funded projects take shape."

The following libraries and organizations were awarded Ohio LSTA<http://library.ohio.gov/lpd/lsta> Digital Literacy Grants:  Antwerp Local Schools; Auglaize County Public District Library; Dayton Metro Library; Kent State University, Tuscarawas Campus; Louisville Public Library; and Wickliffe Public Library.

Antwerp Local Schools received $14,161 to collaborate with the Paulding County District Public Library and Follett's Digital Boost program.  Through the project a small eBook collection will be developed and tablets purchased for loan.  The project will: add an eBook collection of informational text digital resources aligned to the New Learning Standards; have collaborative programming and training with the public library; and increase access to digital resources.

Auglaize County Public District Library received $8,462 to collaborate with the Wapakoneta Family YMCA to encourage early literacy and blended learning opportunities.  Programs will take place at both the YMCA and the library, as well as at preschools and Head Starts.  Funds will be used for AWE Early Learning Stations(tm) and LeapFrog(r) LeapPads(tm).  Programming will include traditional storytimes, crafts, digital resources, and hands-on learning activities.

Dayton Metro Library received $24,000 for a planning grant and pilot to create a Post-Secondary Center for Success housed at the Trotwood and West Carrollton branches. The planning grant includes an extensive evaluation component to identify best practices prior to full implementation in 2016.  High School students will receive the needed information, support and resources to make informed post-secondary career and education choices.  After hours, students will have access to college prep materials, staff support, technology/software, financial aid direction and programming.  The outcome of the project will be an increase in the number of college applications and FASFA forms filed by students affiliated with these two socio-economically challenged branches.  Partners for the project are:  Learn to Earn Dayton, Sinclair Community College, and Welcome to College.

Kent State University, Tuscarawas received $23,996, to develop a MakerSpace in the library in partnership with Blackstone LaunchPad and the Kent State University Tolloty Technology Incubator.  BlackStone LauchPad (BLP) is a resource that assists entrepreneurs bring their ideas and innovations to life.  BLP will help identify training needs, conduct workshops and develop experiential competitions.  The MakerSpace will be located in the library and will be open to all members of the community.  It is the hope of the project coordinator and other staff that the project will be replicated at other KSU campuses.

Louisville Public Library received $22,232 to develop a Library Lab, similar to a MakerSpace.  A variety of equipment will be available for the community to use. Instruction will be self-taught, programming by library staff, or by "MakerMentors" staff from partner, Malone University.  Through the project both technological and digital literacy in the community will increase.

Wickliffe Public Library received $2,989 to assist students read at grade level with particular emphasis on meeting the third grade reading guarantee.  Several tools to be used include AWE AfterSchool Edge(tm) station, Are You Ready Game Show(r) kits, and Summer Bridge Activity(r) books.  During the summer a reading buddy program in partnership with the Rotary Club will be implemented. The final piece of the literacy program is the use of therapy dogs to improve reading confidence.
