[OPLINLIST] Tornado procedures

The only thing I would add to this is minors (under 18) we require to stay in the sheltered area within our building - all others are free to leave of their own accord. Monday night this week we had tornado warning alerts go off while we had two programs happening. About half the patrons left and the rest headed to our area of refuge. Many trickled out as the tornado warnings kept getting extended. Finally, the warning was extended to 10:00 p.m. and we still had about a dozen patrons stay until that time. They were very grateful.

BTW, the weather app from one of the TV stations was handy indeed!

We also require anyone who is going to stay in the building to shelter if there is a tornado warning. We tell them that if they wish to leave they can, but if they stay they have to take shelter. We usually try to have the weather radar up on a computer in the shelter area so that we can see when the warning is lifted. It also often helps to settle folks who don't want to shelter if they can see the warning on the screen.

When the warning sounded here last night I was astounded at the number of people who left, and who kept coming in even though the sirens were going. Apparently there are a lot of people in Chillicothe who don't take the warnings as seriously as Xenia does!

Hi Linda --

We do PA announcements and move all staff and patrons to shelter. We implore folks not to leave the building, but we have no legal authority to stop them if they choose to leave.

We just leave everything in place: we treat it like a fire evacuation. As you can imagine, we take tornados super-seriously here in Xenia, and we've never had any getting folks to shelter or with theft during an emergency.

Thanks!
