[OPLINLIST] Twenty-seven Ohio Libraries nationally recognized as 2014 Star Libraries

[cid:image003.jpg at 01CFF91B.55D6D6D0]The State Library of Ohio is pleased to announce that twenty-seven Ohio Libraries have been recognized as Star Libraries in the 2014 Library Journal Index of Public Library Service<http://lj.libraryjournal.com/category/managing-libraries/lj-index/>. Only New York had a larger number with thirty-six star libraries. "It is wonderful to see so many of Ohio's public libraries being recognized as Star Libraries," expressed State Librarian Beverly Cain.  "Ohio libraries are often referred to as the best in the nation and this is just one more affirmation of just how strong our libraries are, regardless of their size or geographic location."

Libraries are rated on their performance within categories or peer groups determined by operating expenditures. Performance is measured and points awarded in the areas of circulation, library visits, program attendance, and public Internet use. The number of stars a library receives is determined by the total number of points earned in each area.

The libraries in Ohio awarded the top recognition of five stars include Cleveland Heights - University Heights Public Library, Columbus Metropolitan Library, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Grandview Heights Public Library, Hudson Library & Historical Society, Lakewood Public Library, Porter Public Library, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Upper Arlington Public Library, Wagnalls Memorial Library, Westerville Public Library, and Worthington Public Library. Data used to award points for each public library is from annual statistics public library systems submit to their state libraries.   Then each state library submits the gathered data to the Institute of Museum and Library Services<http://www.imls.gov/> (IMLS). The star ratings for the 2013 Library Journal Index of Public Library Service are based on 2011 annual statistics from IMLS.
