Professor Carolyn S. Brodie to be honored with 2014 OELMA Presidential Award

Retired Kent State University School of Library and Information Science Professor Carolyn S. Brodie, Ph.D., will receive the 2014 Presidential Award from the Ohio Educational Library Media Association (OELMA). The Presidential Award honors individuals in the library field for their service to school libraries. The award will be presented on Friday, Oct. 24, at the upcoming OELMA conference in Columbus, Ohio.

OELMA President Susan D. Yutzey, Ph.D., writes, "It gives me great pleasure to announce that this year's recipient of the OELMA Presidential Award is Professor Carolyn S. Brodie.

"Professor Brodie's dedication to school libraries and librarians is evident in so many ways. From the standing-room-only OELMA sessions entitled 'Yet Another 100! Top-Ten-Top Ten Great Websites' to fostering successful collaboration among K-12 teachers and library media specialists at the local, regional and national level through The Institute for Library and Information Literacy Education (ILILE) to creating the Reinberger Children's Library Center at Kent State with state-of-the-art classroom and videoconferencing capability to obtaining the Marantz Picturebook Collection that includes more than 28,000 donated picture books. Named a Library Journal Mover & Shaker with Kent State colleague Professor Greg Byerly in 2003, Professor Brodie was and continues to be a dynamic force for school libraries and librarians nationally and internationally.

"In addition, Professor Brodie shared and continues to share her expertise on children's literature through involvement in American Library Association (ALA) and American Association of School Librarians committees including the Newbery, Caldecott and Notable Children's Book, Association for Library Service to Children Board of Directors and ALA Council. Through her leadership role on these committees Professor Brodie has helped shape not only a generation of readers but also a generation of school librarians who believe passionately in the importance of children's literature and who have followed in her footsteps by volunteering to serve on these national committees. Her professional writings on children's literature, youth librarianship and school libraries that have appeared in countless journals provide us with a vision of our broader responsibilities as school librarians."

Brodie retired from SLIS in May 2014 after 25 years of leading the school's youth services program, which now ranks 10th in the nation, according to U.S. News and World Report. She served as the 2012-13 president of the Association for Library Service to Children, the world's largest organization for library service to children. In 2008 she received the American Library Association's Scholastic Library Publishing Award that is given to a librarian whose "unusual contribution to the stimulation and guidance of reading by children and young people exemplifies outstanding achievement in the profession." She received the Kent State University Distinguished Teaching Award in 2006.

Brodie has been a prolific author of professional books, chapters, articles and more than 300 columns and articles in School Library Monthly (formerly School Library Media Activities Monthly). In addition, she has presented hundreds of workshops on topics related to children's and young adult librarianship and information literacy. She also has been the principal investigator or co-principal investigator for more than 15 grants, totaling more than $6 million dollars, from the Institute for Museum and Library Services and other funding sources.

Brodie will accept the OELMA Presidential Award at a ceremony scheduled for Friday, Oct. 24, 2014, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Quest Center, 8405 Pulsar Place, Columbus, OH 43240.
