The Knight Foundation has a question for you: “How might we leverage
libraries as a platform to build more knowledgeable communities?” They
have $2.5 million to fund the best answers.

Who are they? They’re the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, who
you might have seen mentioned as a sponsor after PBS shows. They’re
behind the Knight News Challenge
<http://www.knightfoundation.org/funding-initiatives/knight-news-challenge/>,
which has funded some amazing projects
<http://www.knightfoundation.org/grants/?funding_option=1>, including
the recent Chicago and New York public library plans to lend out WiFi
hotspots to patrons.

With an average grant award of $200k-$500k, this is an opportunity to
take on something big. Though with entries due September 30th, there’s
also no time to waste. (They only posted the call for entries
yesterday.) Submissions are also posted publicly
<https://www.newschallenge.org/challenge/libraries/submissions/>, so you
can see what others are proposing and comment on their entries.

If you’re at all interested, they have “virtual office hours” on
September 15th when you can call in with questions. Full details on the
call are detailed in a blog post
<http://knightfoundation.org/blogs/knightblog/2014/9/10/bracken-knight-news-challenge-libraries-offers-25-million-innovative-ideas/>.

It’s short notice, but they’re very serious about supporting answers to
the question they’ve posed. Libraries aren’t just places, they’re
platforms. How can they build more knowledgeable communities? They’re
waiting for your answers.
