*Designing a lesson plan can be nerve-wracking when you're doing it for
the first time.* What can you assume students already know? How much
time should you spend defining terms and giving background? How much
talking-about and how much discussion should there be? And who can you
talk to who's taught this subject before, please?
*A framework can organize your approach to the classroom.* It doesn't
provide a lesson plan outline. Instead, it lays out concepts about
learning that can direct your teaching. If one of these guiding
principles is that research is built on previous knowledge, you might
spend class time asking students what they know about a topic to find
what you can build on. Otherwise your students might not be familiar
enough with your examples to understand why one is better than another.
*ACRL's recently-released /Framework for Information Literacy for Higher
Education <http://www.ala.org/acrl/standards/ilframework>/ works this
way.* It's built of six frames that describe information literacy and
what activities promote it. The Framework was revised through a process
<http://acrl.ala.org/ilstandards/?page_id=17> that included the release
of several drafts, and feedback from individuals, committees and the
ACRL Board.
Lots of work has been done, and plenty remains as librarians become
familiar with the Framework and decide how to embrace and how to resist
<http://www.inthelibrarywiththeleadpipe.org/2015/beyond-the-threshold-conformity-resistance-and-the-aclr-information-literacy-framework-for-higher-education>
the confines and flexibilities offered by it. Whether you're taking your
first step into a classroom or are more practiced, the Framework offers
many ways to approach students.

Framing the Framework: Information Literacy for Higher Education and
Beyond on April 20th
Craig Gibson, co-chair of the ACRL task force charged with creating the
/Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education/, will be the
featured speaker at this SLA/SWON event. The program also includes Q&A
with Craig and a panel discussion.
If you're getting familiar with the Framework, this is a great
opportunity to learn more and discuss it with your peers. Join us at the
University of Cincinnati on April 20th, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. (SWON's
paying for the parking.) Registration will open soon at SLA's calendar
<http://cincinnati.sla.org/category/events/>.
