Innovation is all around you
Sometimes it seems like the big ideas are always happening elsewhere.
Those Library Journal “Movers and Shakers[2]” will never be you or
anyone you know. You keep hearing about 3D printers, but your library
can barely keep the Epson receipt machines functional. Makerspace? In
what space, exactly?
However, innovation isn’t always about what’s big and flashy and it is
happening right next door to you. And I don’t just mean when local
librarians like April Ritchie[3] of Kenton County Public, Jason Paul
Michael[4] of Miami University or Sue Polanka[5] at Wright State do
actually win LJ’s Movers and Shakers Award. I mean the innovations – big
and small – that are happening all around you, often without the fanfare
they may deserve.
In May, SWON will be conducting its annual Spring Staff Training
Symposium[6] and we are proud to bring you some of your local
“Innovators Next Door.” We have a slate of leaders from 6 local
libraries of all different types and sizes who will be coming to
share their innovations and, more importantly, to have a
conversation with you.
The entire morning will be devoted to this conversation with Ken Gibson
of Xavier University, Dave Schroeder of Kenton County Public Library,
Melida Busch of Cincinnati Children’s Edward Pratt Library, Cherie Roeth
of the Bradford Public Library, Kim Senft-Paras of the Washington-
Centerville Public Library and Jennifer Spillman of Dayton Metro. In the
afternoon, we’ll feature two breakout sessions that we also hope will
inspire you.
The price for this full-day of training that includes breakfast, a
Cincinnati BBQ lunch and ice cream bars! We hope to see you on May
11th[7] at Dayton Metro Library’s NEW Northwest branch (where we'll have
a chance to see their new innovations on an included tour) for a great
conversation about the innovation happening right next door.

Libraries Consortium's support and hosting. Each regional library system
