Computers in Libraries? Or something new?

A couple of weeks ago, some of you may have had a chance to go to Computers in Libraries <http://swonlibraries.org/link.asp?e=cassondra@swonlibraries.org&job=2342804&ymlink=4777604&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eoplin%2Eorg%2F4cast%2F%3Fp%3D5798> . If not, it is a great yearly conference in Washington, DC that you should keep an eye out for! I know people who go to CIL every year, and many who make it whenever they can, and I never hear anything but glowing reports about what an excellent, interesting and fun even it is.

However, a recent report from the Ohio Public Library Information Network <http://swonlibraries.org/link.asp?e=cassondra@swonlibraries.org&job=2342804&ymlink=4777604&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eoplin%2Eorg%2F4cast%2F%3Fp%3D5798> (OPLIN) caught my eye and made me wonder: how much are we talking about tech other than “computers” in libraries. According to the article, Ohio’s bandwidth use has, pretty consistently, increased about 30% every year for the past several years. 

But next year, we might see that number drop to less than half that amount.

Why? Mobile data, of course! According to the OPLIN piece, by 2020 a stunning 70% of the world’s population will own a mobile device. That will make mobile ownership more common than electricity! In the US, cell phone ownership is approaching 100%, according to the Pew research center <http://swonlibraries.org/link.asp?e=cassondra@swonlibraries.org&job=2342804&ymlink=4777604&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Epewinternet%2Eorg%2Fdata%2Dtrend%2Fmobile%2Fdevice%2Downership%2F> . 

Which brings me to something you might have neglected: your mobile presence. If people are decreasing their Internet access via computer, and mobile ownership is approaching saturation, you can be guaranteed that a large number of your patrons are accessing your website via mobile (or at least trying to!).

Some of us have excellent, dynamic websites that are mobile-ready. Some of us have websites that aren’t even functional on a cell phone screen. Many of us are in-between, but if trends continue, then we cannot afford to ignore how usable our sites are on a 7 inch screen.

And for those of us who don’t work in web design, we have another important job: we need to make sure we know how to guide patrons through our digital resources on the go. Again, many of us may have fairly robust ebook collections, and a host of downloadable and streamable audio files, but we need to all be ready to show our patrons how to use them.

We've all got them: Those CD cases in a style we don't use any more, those extra craft kits we bought in bulk or those toner cartridges for a printer we no longer own. We all hate to get rid of them -- after all, they are still in great shape!

  It's time to take it to the next level with our "Level-Up Labs"

Coming in April and May are more of our popular "Labs, “a place where you can take your skills to the next level. This is more than a class. It’s hands-on practice with tools you’re already using and time to improve your current project so that you’re better prepared for your next project.

April's lab will focus on Positive Approaches to Resolving Performance and Conduct Problems <http://swonlibraries.org/link.asp?e=cassondra@swonlibraries.org&job=2342804&ymlink=4777604&finalurl=http%3A%2F%2Fswonlibraries%2Eorg%2Fevents%2FEventDetails%2Easpx%3Fid%3D705783%26group%3D> . This level-up lab will help managers recognize performance problems and give them skills to address the problem effectively. As a result, you will be able to recognize problems and address them appropriately, determine why standards aren't being met, generate buy-in from employees to meet performance standards, and recognize and celebrate success.
