Beyond Subject Headings: Metadata as a Readers' Advisory Tool

Metadata is probably not the first thing that comes to mind when the conversation turns to Readers’ Advisory. But the landscape of RA is changing – readers are increasingly becoming more self-sufficient, the publishing world is exploding and traditional publishing categories are dissolving, and librarians face a world in which there is stiff competition for the attention of readers. RA-focused metadata can provide librarians with tools to find the books that their readers will love, or arm those readers with the vocabulary to find these books for themselves. During this session, we will revisit the goals of cataloging, explore some best practices for creating taxonomies that support the readers’ advisory work done by librarians, and end with some take-aways that librarians working with readers can bring into their daily practice.

Victoria Caplinger leads the team of librarians in NoveList’s Book Discovery department, which creates readers’ advisory content in many forms. After finishing a four-year tour of duty on ALA’s Notable Books Council, she is now chairing the Carnegie Medals for Excellence in Fiction and Nonfiction award committee. When THIS is done, she looks forward to finally diving back into genre reading – left to her own devices, she particularly enjoys horror, science fiction, and dark psychological studies of people behaving badly.
