Hello all,

OPLIN would like to apologize for yesterday's extended internet outage that
affected so many of you. We are very aware of the importance of the online
services you provide to your communities and regret that those crucial
services were interrupted for so long yesterday.

Yesterday's outage began at about 1:45 pm and ended about 7 hours later (
8:45), affecting all OPLIN libraries with Spectrum (Time Warner Cable)
connections. There was a brief period just before 3:00 yesterday when our
efforts to fix the problem knocked out everyone's internet connectivity.

Here's what happened. OPLIN now has two core routers that are designed to
operate in tandem. Spectrum migrated all of their connections to the newer
router a few weeks ago. Yesterday afternoon, that new router quit
communicating with the older router, and since the older router sits
between the new router and the internet, none of the Spectrum circuits were
able to reach the internet. All of the Spectrum circuits had to be
reconfigured to bypass the new router and connect directly to the
functioning router, which was a lengthy process. In sum, an important piece
of equipment failed unexpectedly at the state computer center which caused
your library and many others to lose your connection to the internet.

Today's, we are working with the router manufacturer to determine what went
wrong yesterday. Meanwhile, all of the OPLIN circuits should once again be
stable and reliable.

Again, all of us here at OPLIN apologize that this occurred. Bringing fast
reliable, internet connections to your libraries is our passion.

Take care and be well,
Mandy Knapp
