Basic Function:

Provide leadership to and serve as the principal administrator of the University Libraries system and the Kent State University Press. This includes responsibility for personnel, general administration, management, budget and development functions for the Kent campus libraries and administration of the Kent State University Press. Reports to the Executive Vice President and Provost.

Examples of Duties:

Duties/essential functions may include, but not be limited to, the following:
Provide leadership in establishing, articulating and implementing visionary goals that serve the academic mission of the university; engages in strategic planning and in assessing progress toward those goals.

Provide strategic direction and collaboratively promote a culture and practice of innovation among faculty and staff that fosters student success.

Lead University Libraries ongoing efforts to provide a student-friendly environment, broad access to materials, and professional support for teaching and research in an effective and efficient manner.

Coordinate University Libraries activities across the university's eight-campus library system, with a special emphasis on expanding shared services.

Develop a strategic plan for the University Libraries system, as guided by Kent State's Strategic Roadmap to a Distinctive Kent State.

Provide leadership in the spirit of shared governance and in a collective bargaining environment.

Lead and participate in the State of Ohio's mandated efforts to share services across institutions of public higher education.

Ensure the provision of services responsive to the information needs of the university community.

Support the development of collections that meet the university's needs and enrich the global academic community.

Support the educational mission of the libraries to ensure the development of information literacy competencies in students.

Supervise the director of the University Press to formulate broad goals and address issues related to administration.

Develop and administer the University Libraries' budget and advise university administration on budgetary issues, with the goal of continued fiscal sustainability and financial solvency.

Assume a leadership role and focus on fundraising and development.

Facilitate the university community's engagement with a diverse global society through collections, spaces, and services; commitment to diversification of the college/campuses.

Participate and provide leadership in OhioLINK and other academic consortia and professional organizations.

Serve on department, division, and university committees; represents University Libraries and Kent State University Press at appropriate university bodies, committees, councils, etc.; serve as primary advocate and spokesperson at academic, social and public functions.

Coordinate and oversee special projects.

Provide leadership and oversight of a large and complex organization; support equity, diversity, and professional development of library faculty and staff.

Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Terminal degree (Master's Degree from an accredited American Library Association program); a substantive record of scholarly and professional achievements; and progressively responsible administrative experience in an academic or research library. Distinguished professional experience; an academic record sufficient to qualify for faculty appointment at a senior rank.
License/Certification:

Knowledge Of:
Desktop office computing applications University structure and academic programs
Issues affecting university libraries and higher education
Role of library in the teaching and learning environment of a university
Budget management, strategic planning, and academic programs

Skill In:
Demonstrated commitment to diversity, outreach and collaboration, and collegiality with library faculty and staff
Written, verbal and interpersonal communication
Evaluating and assessing programs and their impact on library users
Providing supervisory support and guidance for staff

Ability To:
Provide leadership and direction
Outline clear goals and conceptual framework for library services
Serve as an effective advocate within the university and with external stakeholders

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Incumbent may be required to travel from building to building frequently and off campus on occasion.
