Play is important, and all children need it! Mother Goose on the Loose is a lively program filled with tips on providing playful learning experiences for the children in our communities. This workshop provides professional development by exploring the science behind play and its importance in our programs & activities and practicing multiple ways to include play in story times and circle times.  Mother Goose on the Loose is a proven method for planning and presenting programs that focuses on the whole child and incorporates research-based theories of learning, music, puppets, picture books, nursery rhymes, art, play, and language. The goal of MGOL is to help young children develop and strengthen early literacy and school readiness skills in a nurturing environment through engaging activities.
Mother Goose on the Loose was created by Betsy Diamant-Cohen, who holds a BA from Brandeis University, an MLS from Rutgers University, and a DCD (Doctorate of Communications Design) from the University of Baltimore. She was influenced by training with “Your Baby Needs Music” classes run by Barbara Cass-Beggs in the late 1980s, where she learned the “listen, like, learn” method. Eventually, Betsy created MGOL out of her popular library programming and began to share it with other librarians and staff as a workshop.
In 2004, Betsy was selected by Library Journal as a “re-inventor” and chosen as one of the “Movers and Shakers: people who are shaping the future of libraries” largely due to the success of Mother Goose on the Loose. Based on that, Neal Shuman publishing company invited her to write a Mother Goose on the Loose book. Betsy has been giving training workshops around the country ever since. She was profiled in the University of Baltimore alumni magazine as a “Librarian on the Loose.” In 2013,  she was the recipient of ASCLA’s Leadership and Professional Achievement Award, which stated that Mother Goose on the Loose “has revolutionized the way story times are presented to young children at libraries across the country and has empowered librarians to work confidently with this young population of readers.” Last year, she was selected as the winner of the 2018 Alexandre Vattermare Award for Creativity in Libraries.
On April 18th, with the help of funds from an LSTA grant, SWON is excited to offer this amazing all-day literacy learning opportunity. Interested in attending? Reserve your spot today!

When was the last time you found yourself with an opportunity to share the successes and challenges of your library with a potential benefactor or collaborator? Are you prepared to tell your story in 2 minutes or less? In business circles it’s called an “elevator speech,” but it’s actually more of an introduction intended to pique someone’s interest to learn more. Our brains remember stories. An elevator speech is a short story. What is your story… in 2 minutes or less?

While weeding training often focuses on nonfiction and informational materials, tending your fiction and popular materials collections are just as important!
Keeping popular materials well-curated can revitalize collections, increase circulation, and enhance the visibility of diverse materials. Weeding is a tool that focuses your active readers advisory efforts while simplifying your collection’s passive readers advisory potential. Learn tips and tricks for reaping the readers advisory benefits of actively weeding your collections.
