The development of information literacy skills for youth is more relevant than ever. Librarians have unique opportunities to integrate information literacy while providing reference services to youth.

New innovations have increased opportunities for librarians to use a wide variety of digital and social tools to engage youth online. Youth have direct access to a wide range of informational resources that may or may not be authoritative, credible, current or accurate. Thus, facilitating development of information literacy skills and providing research assistance and outreach are especially important for those librarians serving youth.

In this webinar, Meghan Harper, Ph.D., will share strategies for creating an information literacy instructional plan, facilitating collaborative partnerships with community partners, educators and parents, strategies for integrating information literacy instruction through reference services, and evaluating and assessing information literacy needs.
Meghan Harper has published numerous articles, chapters, manuscripts and reviews relating to her research interests, which include school library administration, facility design, multiliteracies, care-based practices, electronic portfolios, cataloging, evaluation and assessment. Harper is also the author of Reference Sources and Services for Youth and has two more books slated for publication. She received the Presidential Award from the Ohio Educational Library Media Association in 2013. Harper has been an invited speaker and presenter both nationally and internationally. Prior to joining Kent State, Dr. Harper held administrative positions of Assistant Curriculum Director, Director of Technology and Libraries, and worked as a school librarian at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Harper holds a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction, Masters in Library Science (with K-12 Library Media Certification), and Bachelors of Science in elementary education (with K-8 certification), all from Kent State University.

This 3-hour workshop will provide instruction on a variety of content pertaining to information security. The first third of the class will cover a basic overview of the information security industry, an explanation of terms frequently used, an introduction to basic concepts of security principles, and identification of potential threats. The second third of the workshop will dig a little deeper into how to identify and mitigate threats like phishing emails and social engineering phone calls. Gain a better understanding on how to recognize malicious intent, as well as how to get out of harm’s way. The last third of the workshop will provide practical knowledge about social media safety as well as tips about how to perform Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) searches online. Having tools to better identify potential threats and then do research fits into the library security model and will round out the workshop. You do not need to be tech savvy to participate in this talk. This is not a technical talk, it is an informational workshop. Computers are not required for class, but feel free to bring a laptop for notetaking.

As professionals in the library field, we are tasked with important caring responsibilities; our patrons come to us for support with their entertainment, educational, and emotional needs. Our coworkers need us, too, and working with so many different people and personalities throughout the day can take its toll. In this webinar, we will explore the concept of compassion fatigue, which can set in over many years of caring for others.
Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!
