Information Security with Tracy Z Maleeff
This month, SWON is pleased to offer you two opportunities to learn from Tracy Z. Maleeff aka @InfoSecSherpa. Tracy is a Cyber Analyst in the Security Operations Center for a global company. Prior to joining the Information Security industry, Tracy worked as a librarian in academic, corporate, and private law firm libraries. While a member of the Special Libraries Association, she received the Dow Jones Innovate Award, the Wolters Kluwer Law & Business Innovations in Law Librarianship award, and was named a Fellow. She has presented at many conferences, both Library & Information Science as well as Information Security, on topics ranging from social media, networking, research strategies, and security awareness. She received the Women in Security Leadership Award from the Information Systems Security Association and is very active in the Info Sec community. Tracy holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh, as well as undergraduate degrees from both Temple University and the Pennsylvania State University.
On April 29th, Tracy will lead a three hour workshop that provides instruction on a variety of content pertaining to information security. The first third of the class will cover a basic overview of the information security industry, an explanation of terms frequently used, an introduction to basic concepts of security principles, and identification of potential threats. The second third of the workshop will dig a little deeper into how to identify and mitigate threats like phishing emails and social engineering phone calls. Attendees will gain a better understanding on how to recognize malicious intent, as well as how to get out of harm’s way. The last third of the workshop will provide practical knowledge about social media safety as well as tips about how to perform Open Source Intelligence (OSINT) searches online. Having tools to better identify potential threats and then do research fits into the library security model and will round out the workshop. You do not need to be tech savvy to participate in this talk. This is not a technical talk, it is an informational workshop. Computers are not required for class, but feel free to bring a laptop for notetaking.
April 30th is SWON's Spring Membership Meeting, and Tracy will be with us again to give an hour long presentation on securing your library before the membership meeting portion begins. Attendees will gain an understanding of Information Security vocabulary and best practices for the protection of personal and library data as well as what resources are available for the purposes of security news monitoring, collection development, or training, and get some insight on how to provide Information Security resources and support for your patrons. In total, attendees will understand how libraries need to be ready and aware when it comes to Information Security. You will come away from this session empowered with knowledge of how to create some defenses and deal with Information Security without fear, uncertainty, or doubt.

Preventing Harassment in the Library: Responding to Sexual,
Racial, and Bullying Incidents Involving Staff or Patrons
Mark Twain said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.” As a training issue, it’s the same with sexual and racial harassment and bullying prevention; everybody thinks they know about it, what to do or not to do in the workplace, and yet, it’s still near the top of the complaints filed with or by the federal and state Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions.
Sexual and racial harassment and bullying prevention in any library organization is about having an updated and accurate policy, training all employees to follow that policy, and then enforcing the policy, using consequences for the perpetrators (who could be staff members or patrons), and support for the victims. Staff have a right to work in a harassment-free workplace. Part of the responsibility is for directors, managers, and supervisors to create that kind of culture, pay attention to staff conflict based on this issue, and be ready to intervene if the harasser is a patron, to protect staff members. The other part of the responsibility is for staff to tell their bosses (or HR, or their city/county/agency attorney, among others )if they are being harassed by other employees or patrons.
This 60-minute webinar-based training program is suitable for all library directors, managers, supervisors, and (full and part-time) employees.
Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!
