SWON Webinar: Promoting information literacy skills for youth through reference services
The development of information literacy skills for youth is more relevant than ever. Librarians have unique opportunities to integrate information literacy while providing reference services to youth.
New innovations have increased opportunities for librarians to use a wide variety of digital and social tools to engage youth online. Youth have direct access to a wide range of informational resources that may or may not be authoritative, credible, current or accurate. Thus, facilitating development of information literacy skills and providing research assistance and outreach are especially important for those librarians serving youth.
In this discussion, we would like to share strategies for creating an information literacy instructional plan, facilitating collaborative partnerships with community partners, educators and parents, strategies for integrating information literacy instruction through reference services and evaluating and assessing information literacy needs.

Preventing Harassment in the Library
Mark Twain said, “Everybody talks about the weather, but no one does anything about it.” As a training issue, it’s the same with sexual and racial harassment and bullying prevention; everybody thinks they know about it, what to do or not to do in the workplace, and yet, it’s still near the top of the complaints filed with or by the federal and state Equal Employment Opportunity Commissions.
Sexual and racial harassment and bullying prevention in any library organization is about having an updated and accurate policy, training all employees to follow that policy, and then enforcing the policy, using consequences for the perpetrators (who could be staff members or patrons), and support for the victims. Staff have a right to work in a harassment-free workplace. Part of the responsibility is for directors, managers, and supervisors to create that kind of culture, pay attention to staff conflict based on this issue, and be ready to intervene if the harasser is a patron, to protect staff members. The other part of the responsibility is for staff to tell their bosses (or HR, or their city/county/agency attorney, among others )if they are being harassed by other employees or patrons.
This 60-minute webinar-based training program is suitable for all library directors, managers, supervisors, and (full and part-time) employees.
Can't attend on the date and time listed? Anyone who registers in advance for PCI Webinars will receive an archived copy of the presentation for later viewing. SWON provides PCI Webinars to our Supporting Members for free (and to Geographic Members and everyone else at a reduced price), so there's no reason not to register today!
