[OPLINLIST] Ohio Department of Education Announces Summer Food Service Program Plans

After getting some questions from libraries about the Ohio Department of Education's (ODE) potential sponsor survey for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), I talked with a program specialist at the ODE, who clarified the process.

If you are already an SFSP site, work with your current sponsor to prepare for summer 2019. No special action required.

If you want to become an SFSP site, it's better to contact an existing sponsor in your area than to complete the survey (notwithstanding the language in the press release).
If you already completed the survey, no worries - wait for an ODE program specialist to contact you, or go ahead and follow the steps below.

A note about sites and sponsors.

*        Sites are the locations where meals/snacks are served. Nearly all participating libraries are sites and not sponsors.

*        Sponsors handle the financial, administrative and food service responsibilities for SFSP in an area. Sponsors may contract with food service providers and do not have to prepare the food themselves. Sponsors are reimbursed for all expenses by the USDA. A few libraries are sponsors as well as sites.

To explore becoming a site:

First, go to the USDA's Capacity Builder Map to see if you are eligible to be an SFSP site:

*        Wait for the map to fully load. Click on the box for "FY19 FNS CACFP SFSP Eligibility" and search for your address.

*        If your library is in a pink area, you are eligible to serve food on site through SFSP.

*        If not, you may provide outreach programming and other support to existing sites in your service area, or possibly set up a site away from library grounds, with the assistance of a sponsor.

*        If your entire service area is not eligible, you may have other options. You're welcome to contact me to discuss!

Next, go to the ODE's SFSP site map:

*        Look for the 2018 sites that are closest to your location, and click to identify the sponsor's name.

*        Contacting a sponsor or sponsors already working in your area is the most efficient and productive path to becoming a site.

*        If there are no sites in your area, you might try your school district or the foodbank that serves your county (see ohiofoodbanks.org/foodbanks<http://ohiofoodbanks.org/foodbanks/>). Or contact an ODE program specialist to discuss other options. Find a contact list on the same page as the ODE's SFSP site map.

Ohio Department of Education Announces Summer Food Service Program Plans

With the help of numerous sponsoring agencies and stakeholders, the Summer Food Service Program works to feed thousands of children in Ohio.

Despite these numbers, many Ohio parents and caregivers are forced to make difficult decisions daily in order to provide for their families. In many cases, this leaves Ohio's most vulnerable citizens, our children and youth, struggling with hunger daily.

This year, the Ohio Department of Education wants to increase participation in summer meal programs and is actively seeking local nonprofit agencies to participate as sponsors or sites by providing free meals to children.

"During the summer months, many children worry about access to nutritious meals when they should be focused on fun activities and independent learning," said Paolo DeMaria, state superintendent of public instruction. "The Summer Food Service Program helps fill this need in our communities by providing healthy meals in locations where students spend much of their time during the summer. The program means students can focus on what is most important during this time - playing, reading, being outdoors and growing."

Free meals are provided at schools, colleges and universities, nonprofit organizations, parks, camps, community centers, swimming pools, libraries, low-income housing complexes and more.

Sponsoring organizations receive reimbursement to cover the costs of providing nutritious meals and snacks to children in eligible areas. Nonprofit organizations offering summer activities for children living in low-income areas also are encouraged to apply.

Expansion of the program is particularly needed in southern Ohio counties, where families struggle with food insecurity, as well as in rural communities and areas where migrant families reside.

The Summer Food Service Program ensures that children ages 1-18 continue to receive nutritious meals during the summer break from school, when they do not have access to school breakfast or lunch. Children with disabilities and approved individualized education programs may participate through age 21.

A sponsoring organization must be:

  *   A public or nonprofit private school;
  *   A public or nonprofit private residential summer camp;
  *   A unit of local, municipal, county or state government;
  *   A public or nonprofit college or university; or
  *   A private nonprofit organization.

The Summer Food Service Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and administered by the Ohio Department of Education.
