A Note from the Research and Innovation Coordinator
[https://myneotoday.org/photos/35595_02132017081803.jpg]A little while back I was visiting a library and talking with the branch manager. We were discussing their programming and attendance. While this library had some amazing emerging tech at their library, they said one of the best attended and most rewarding programs was when they did their “unplugged” tech workshops. They would do coding programs where they would have to “code” their partner to do tasks using computational thinking skills. They would work to create moveable robots from everyday objects they had around them. These programs increased creative, out-of-the-box and critical thinking skills. In other words, it was less about the tools and more about developing a coding and maker mindset.

 On July 17th, we have a workshop that focuses on doing just that, “Developing a Maker Mindset: No Makerspace Required <https://mms.neo-rls.org/Calendar/moreinfo.php?eventid=53105> .” This workshop will provide you with techniques you can use to enhance the maker mindset and empower your patrons and staff. It will also show you how to use different strategies to teach your patrons on all levels, regardless of whether they have a strong tech background or no experience at all. Finally, you will discover the value of using the maker mindset, inside and outside of the maker space. I hope you will join us for this workshop on July 17 th

Hosting a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in Your Library
Wednesday, July 31, 2019 From YOUR Desktop<https://mms.neo-rls.org/Calendar/moreinfo_responsive.php?eventid=52977&org_id=NEOL>

In this webinar, you will learn the basics for holding a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon in your library. Edit-a-thons are a great programming activity for adults, or an opportunity to partner with a local organization. The presenter will share what worked and what didn’t from two separate editing events.

Learning objectives:

  *   Create/define a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon
  * Prepare and plan for the event
  * Conduct and evaluate the event
Presenter:
[https://neo-rls.org/photos/51911_05172019125527.jpg]Beth Owens is the Research & Scholarly Communications Librarian in the Ingalls Library at the Cleveland Museum of Art. In her role she liaises with several different departments within the museum, and serves as a personal librarian for graduate students enrolled in the Joint Program in Art History and Museum Studies with Case Western Reserve University. Beth has a BA in Art History from Northwestern University, and an MLIS from Kent State University.
