[OPLINLIST] Ten Ohio Public Libraries Receive Funding for Workforce Development

The State Library of Ohio  is pleased to announce the ten libraries* in Ohio that were recently selected to receive funding from Libraries Lead with Digital Skills<http://www.ala.org/pla/initiatives/google>, an initiative of the American Library Association and Public Library Association, sponsored by Grow with Google. The goal of the initiative is to ensure that public libraries across the nation receive ongoing access to free tools and resources to help everyone across America grow their skills, careers and businesses.

Ohio's recently awarded libraries integrate Grow with Google<https://grow.google/> programs into events or ongoing workshops to address the needs of their communities, including:

Cuyahoga Falls Library
One-day event focused on job seekers, including a LinkedIn workshop and an overview of resources for enhancing job skills through Google's Applied Digital Skills materials.
Grafton-Midview Public Library (GMPL)
GMPL will offer four once-weekly, two-hour programs highlighting Grow with Google's job search toolsets. The program will be half spent on exploring these tools, and the second half will focus on hands-on practice.
Jackson City Library (JCL)
JCL will focus on providing new job search tools to community members in the 45-65 age bracket, teaching computer and resume skills and providing one-on-one tutoring sessions.
Lee Road Branch, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Libraries
This program will help individuals search for job opportunities, explore career sites, write a resume, submit applications, and practice interviewing. This 4-8-hour course will be offered as a 4-part series.
Licking County Library
Day one of the program will introduce Google Drive and Google Docs and will be a blended-learning workshop with up to 32 participants viewing the "Creating a Resume in Google Docs" videos and creating their own resume. Day two will focus first on Applied Digital Skills/Using Google to Get a New Job/Lesson 5 "Crafting Your Resume," then continuing with "Job Search Techniques Using Google," as well as local resources, such as partner Ohio Means Jobs.
Lorain Public Library System
The library will plan and host a one-day workshop for adult and new adult job seekers designed to teach and develop both the digital and practical skills needed to successfully navigate an online job search, including sessions on the following subjects: online resume writing and applications, online job seeking platforms, utilizing social media platforms to boost your online presence and appeal to hiring managers, and interview skills, tips and practice.
MidPointe Library System (MLS)
MLS will use a variety of Applied Digital Skills workshops to walk users through the job search process, from creating a resume to giving an interview. The workshops will happen in conjunction with Ohio's state employment agency, Ohio Means Jobs.
Rocky River Public Library (RRPL)
RRPL currently provides users with one-on-one sessions re: job searches and are seeking to use the funds to expand this service to more users, as well as to introduce one-on-one interview assistance.
Wellsville Carnegie Public Library
The goal is to become a one-stop shop in the community by offering programming that will give patrons the tools and education they need to succeed. The target audience is people in the community that might not know where to begin with a job search or that don't have access to personal computers outside of the library.
Westerville Public Library
The target audience would be adult learners: job-seekers, business owners, skill-builders, and life-long learners. Programs will introduce Google products and programs and share how they can utilize them in their everyday lives and for their specific needs.

"We're thrilled that Ohio libraries are participating in the Libraries Lead with Digital Skills initiative," said State Librarian Beverly Cain. "Many libraries already serve job seekers and entrepreneurs. This funding will be a boost for their programs to build specific skills."
The $1,000 grants can be used by libraries to continue or expand services and programs related to workforce development. In addition to the funding, awardees will receive marketing support, technical guidance, advocacy tools and a community of practice with the goal of drawing attention to the services libraries provide.

"The concrete skills people gain through these programs can transform them for a lifetime," Beverly Cain said. "Ohioans can come into the library barely knowing how to do an internet search and leave with the skills to find and apply for a job online. New business owners with no online presence will leave with a public listing."

"Public libraries are constantly innovating new ways to address the challenges of building skills for their community's workforce," said Leighann Wood, Program Manager at the Public Library Association. "Libraries Lead with Digital Skills will enable more libraries to meet those challenges with resources and a plan to move forward. It's not only about enhancing programs at select libraries. These awards in Ohio will result in case studies for libraries and library advocates around the nation to draw upon as they build economically successful communities."

"Libraries are pivotal leaders in providing digital skills programs in the community," said Nicky Rigg, program manager for digital skills outreach at Google. "We are excited to learn from libraries across the country and shine a spotlight on how important their services are to job seekers and small businesses."

Grow with Google is an initiative to help create economic opportunities for all Americans. In 2019, Grow With Google made a commitment<https://www.blog.google/outreach-initiatives/grow-with-google/grow-google-coming-library-near-you/> to deliver free, in-person workshops for job seekers, small businesses, and library staff in all 50 states.
