This notice is being cross-posted to Library Youth Services, SmLibs, and OPLINlist. Thank you.

Summer looks a whole lot different this year. Instead of big kickoff parties and standing-room-only special performances, fabulous decorations, volunteen-staffed registration tables, and prize baskets on display, 2020's Summer Library Program (SLP) is online, non-congregate, with performers via YouTube and Facebook Live, registration and activity packet distribution online or at curbside, and prize distribution possibly waiting until after SLP ends.

While the public health emergency brings huge constraints and challenges, Ohio librarians have a long history of producing super-creative, engaging summer library programs, frequently with limited resources. We are in an unprecedented situation, and it's both realistic and wise not to aim too high. But some practices, ideas, and innovations libraries are experimenting with this summer will be so successful, they'll become standard practice for SLP long after social distancing guidelines and heightened disinfecting practices are memories.

Each year, the State Library asks all Ohio public libraries to report on their SLP. This year's survey will let you share the results of this unique summer. Your participation in the 2020 Ohio SLP Evaluation Survey helps us collect, share, and learn from the experiences of libraries operating an SLP in current conditions. As it does each year, your participation also allows us to tell stakeholders and decision-makers how summer programs and activities provided by public libraries positively impact children, teens, families, adults, and communities.

This year's survey will be shorter - just 12 questions, of which most are optional. It can take as little as 3-5 minutes if you have your numbers ready at hand, longer if you have stories or details to share. The 2019 survey included 14 questions and took, on average, 18 minutes.

The survey will be open from mid-June through early October. A link will be posted to OPLINlist, the Library Youth Services list, and the Small Libraries list, and will appear on the Ohio SLP page of the State Library website (library.ohio.gov/ohio-summer-library-program<https://library.ohio.gov/services-for-libraries/library-programs-development/youth-services/ohio-summer-library-program/>). Please help achieve 100% participation for 2020.

Here is a summary of the questions on the survey. Review these questions, and track your SLP activities accordingly if possible.

2020 Ohio Summer Library Program Evaluation Survey Preview:

  *   Library contact information
  * Did your library offer a summer library program in 2020 for children? Teens? Adults?
  *   How many children/teens/adults participated?
  * How do you define participation (e.g. as anyone who registers, or as anyone who does at least one activity, or as anyone who completes the program, etc.)?
  * Optional: registration/completion numbers, completion rate, outcomes, and/or any analysis of your results that you wish to share.
  * Optional: online events/programs, self-guided experiences, etc. - description, participation numbers (if available), outcomes, and/or any analysis of your results that you wish to share.
  * Did your library participate in or support the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)? How many outlets/branches were SFSP sites?
  * Would you consider your 2020 Summer Library Program a success, given the circumstances?
  * Did you implement anything new for 2020 that you plan to keep doing in future years, even under "normal" conditions? If so, please describe.
  * Anything else you would like to share about your 2020 SLP? Examples of the positive impact of your SLP on a child, teen, adult, or family in your community are particularly valuable.

Good luck this summer! I hope participation and patron engagement exceed your expectations.

Sincerely,
Janet
