Drag Queen Story Time
Sarah Barriage at the University of Kentucky School of Information Science is studying drag queen storytimes in Kentucky and surrounding states. Her team would like to attend 1-2 drag queen storytimes, take notes on the activities, and then talk to the attendees (caregivers and children), with their permission. They are able to compensate participating libraries, caregivers, and children for their participation.

They would like to identify library locations that are planning to host a drag queen storytime this summer (June - August) who may be interested in being a part of this project. They are able to travel to any area in Ohio.

Please contact Sarah Barriage at sarah.barriage at uky.edu <mailto:sarah.barriage at uky.edu> if you are planning a drag queen storytime and are interested in participating, or if you have any questions about this project. Sarah is happy to share more details about the project or answer any questions or concerns that folks might have.
A Note from the Education and Events Coordinator
[http://neo-rls.org/photos/59853_03022020112847.jpg]Last week I had the opportunity to attend my first PLA Conference. I came away with some great topics and speakers. Here is a sampling of programs I reviewed and vendors I visited. I started the conference by learning more about E-Sports and evidence that supports how E-Sports helps kids be connected when they may not have had this opportunity. I heard about how a small library partnered with a college and utilized their social work interns to create partnerships with local agencies to assist patrons. The Intentional Inclusion program on disrupting the Middle Class Bias in Library Programming was quite interesting. One item in particular that stood out for me was “Library Restorative Practices for Youth.” I had the pleasure of listening to Toledo Lucas County Public Library share how they "Work through Transitions and Institutional Change." I saw many ideas for environmental literacy not to mention a library that gave money for ride shares to get teens to the library. Hillsboro Public Library talked about "Patron Centered Services. " "Programming for All Abilities" gave attendees many things to think about. I ended Thursday with Spark Talks and came away with many more possibilities. Friday started off strong with Denver Public Library talking about "Welcoming Transgender Customers" followed by "LGBTQ+ Readers Advisory." I heard a library talk about how they used weekly podcasts to share communications with staff about staff members, new initiatives and so much more. I heard a Spark Talk on the Dyslexia Friendly Library. I made many connections with exhibitors like the USDA National Agricultural Library, Federal Trade Commission and Operation Warm. Lastly, do you know about the Google Ad Grants for $10,000 of in-kind Google Ads advertising? I plan to host a webinar to learn more? I am excited to begin contacting these speakers and many others to put together webinars for our members to learn from. Watch the website for new fall webinars coming soon.
