On Wednesday, September 1 at 7 p.m. the Hudson Library & Historical Society will host a live virtual streaming event with Jeff VanderMeer, author of the novel Hummingbird Salamander. A brilliant speculative thriller of dark conspiracy, endangered species and the possible end of all things, Hummingbird Salamander was dubbed by Helen Phillips of The New York Times as “climate fiction at its most urgent and gripping.” VanderMeer is the author of Annihilation, which won the Nebula Award and the Shirley Jackson Award and was adapted into a movie by Alex Garland starring Natalie Portman.

Security consultant “Jane Smith” receives an envelope with a key to a storage unit that holds a taxidermied hummingbird and clues leading her to a taxidermied salamander. Silvina, the dead woman who left the note, is a reputed ecoterrorist and the daughter of an Argentine industrialist. By taking the hummingbird from the storage unit, Jane sets in motion a series of events that quickly spin beyond her control.

VanderMeer is the author of Dead Astronauts, Borne, and The Southern Reach Trilogy, the first volume of which, Annihilation, won the Nebula Award and the Shirley Jackson Award and was adapted into a movie by Alex Garland starring Natalie Portman. VanderMeer speaks and writes frequently about issues relating to climate change.

Copies of Hummingbird Salamander will be available for purchase courtesy of the Learned Owl Book Shop. Registration for this program is required and a valid email address is required at time of registration. Participants will receive an email invitation to attend the program, hosted on Zoom, a day before the program begins.
